Review: TenPoint Vapor Crossbow Package

Outdoor Empire pick as best crossbow on the market.

TenPoint is known for releasing the highest quality crossbows in the market. They have an almost cult like following in some circles, and for good reason, they make a hell of a crossbow. This is an overview and recommendation of one of their flagship models: the TenPoint Vapor.

The TenPoint Vapor is interesting because it performs more like a high-quality, medium-grade crossbow than a high-end one. This is because it is geared more toward medium game hunting and overall usability and quality, rather than flashy energy or speed numbers.

Features

Package Contents

This might be the most equipped out of the box crossbow in the market. It is one of the few true “take out of the box and hunt” setups available. Here’s what you get:

tenpoint-vapor-crossbow-package

  • TenPoint’s Range Master Pro Scope mounted on a machined aluminum 7/8-inch Fixed Dovetail Mount
  • Your choice of either the patented ACUdraw or ACUdraw 50 cocking mechanism
  • Instant Detach 3-Arrow Quiver
  • Ambidextrous Side-Mount Quiver Bracket
  • Six-pack of TenPoint Pro V22 carbon fiber arrows with 100-grain practice points
  • Deluxe Soft Crossbow Case
  • TenPoint’s exclusive Bowjax Crossbow Noise Dampening Kit
  • String Dampening System (SDS)
  • Owner’s Instructional DVD
  • TenPoint vehicle window sticker

If you’re looking for a one stop shop for your crossbow, this is it. Aside from maybe a sling, there’s really nothing to add to this kit to make it better.

Specifications

The power stroke is very long, that’s how it achieves a respectable 360 FPS with only a 165 lbs draw weight. The bow weighs 6.8 lbs on hand, very reasonable for a bow this length.

With 118 ft. lbs. of kinetic energy, this is a bow for the biggest deer, black bear and a decent choice for elk hunting. If you are lucky enough to chase moose through the backcountry with a tag in your pocket, do so with caution and be choosy with your shots.

To really appreciate it, you have to line it up against its peers, in price at least. This is to illustrate what your money is buying you in terms of features. There’s no denying it, the TenPoint Vapor lacks in features compared to others at its price.

The Excalibur Micro Suppressor is smaller, lighter, quieter, faster, and cheaper. The Barnett Ghost 410 is substantially faster with 50% more energy than the Vapor and is only slightly heavier. This doesn’t bode well, so why is this crossbow so successful?

The reason to buy it is for the quality. Yes, there are faster, more powerful and cheaper bows out there. There are a few crossbows in the market that can go toe to toe with the Vapor’s quality of design and materials.

Rating The TenPoint Vapor Crossbow Package

This is based on a 1 to 5 stars rating.

Materials

five star rating

The generous use of structural plastic is refreshingly missing from this weapon. Everything that needs to be reinforced metal is a well-designed and selected grade of aluminum. 5 stars are given for its materials.

Quality

five star rating

You can expect it to last. The warranty is also nice to have in the event there’s a defect, but I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with a bow from TenPoint. They have an excellent reputation for making bombproof crossbows. 5 stars for its quality.

Design

five star rating

Its design is interesting because they went with a long power stroke and lighter draw weight. This made it longer than others. Its length makes it feel front heavy if you shoot it off hand but it makes up for it by being easy to cock.

If you’re a new hunter and need a bow that is easy to pull back, this is awesome.

You don’t notice it while hunting where you ideally only cock your bow once, but you’ll notice it while practicing. After 2 or 3 dozen shots with a typical bow you wear out but with this, you can literally shoot it all day. 5 stars are given for its design.

Features

four and half star rating

The features are a bit lacking. The anti-dry-fire system works but it’s a bit on the slow side. With the price of the package, you’d expect it to be more powerful.

If you’ve been crossbow hunting for a while and are looking for an upgrade, this is a solid bow. It is suited for the meanest deer hunting situations you could imagine and has plenty of power for hogs and bears as well. 4.5 stars are given for its features.

Value

four and half star rating

It could be a tad faster and more powerful but it comes with a list of quality essentials to make hunting more effective. The money spent on this bow is definitely worth it. TenPoint knows quality and this bow is something that the hunter can pass down. 4.5 stars are given for its value.

Pros:

  • Outstanding quality
  • Comes with a complete starting kit
  • Very easy to cock, even with a rope cocker

Cons:

  • It feels long and front heavy in the hand, especially with a quiver on
  • It could shoot faster for its price range
  • Expensive for the level of power you’re getting from it

Final Verdict

The TenPoint Vapor received an overall score of 4.8 stars. It is a great crossbow for hunting that is recommended for eastern deer, hog and bear hunting.

For hunting out west in the dark timber or at extended ranges, you’d want either a smaller or faster bow. This is just a boringly reliable and quality crossbow for 99% of the hunting situations most people find themselves in.

If you’re chasing speed, power or compactness, this isn’t for you. There are bows for that at a far cheaper price. This is a refined quality crossbow that is just an all-around workhorse.
